Keeping Fit Abroad Series: Federal Way, WA

Here's a great post from Ricardo's "PointsFitness.com" blog. Ricardo travels all around for work but still manages to stay in shape by keeping health and fitness a priority. No matter what city he's in, he finds a local gym to get in his workout.

Below is his blog post about his experience at Freedom Fitness in Federal Way. It's nice to know that someone like Ricardo, who has been to gyms all across the country, gives Freedom Fitness a glowing review and the praise we're due.

Take a minute to read Ricardo's description of a visit to Freedom Fitness...

"As I wrote some time ago, FTU was a great and successful event, and yet, it’s no excuse to not get my gym time in. So I did some research and found an awesome gym, with one of the favorite setups I’ve seen for the type of training I enjoy.

"My experience with Freedom Fitness (about 15-20 minutes south of Seattle-Tacoma Intl. Airport) was great from the get go. I contacted the gym through their website contact form about a week before my planned visit, and within a day I received a response from the gym’s owner, Drew. Because it’s an independent gym it’s easy to arrange to pay reasonable drop-in fees, unlike globo gyms, like LA Fitness, 24-hour, etc.

"Freedom Fitness provides you with so many options! For instance, there are two locations: Federal Way and Burien. There are always personal trainers on site leading bootcamp classes or otherwise assisting other clients. No, you don’t have to pay $500 per hour to these trainers. This is included in your membership or drop-in fee. You have the option of jumping in a bootcamp class, selecting from a large array of workouts that they have available for you to choose from to do on your own, or otherwise doing your own thing.

"In my opinion this gym brings together the best aspects of both worlds: your standard gym and your bootcamp/crossfit style high intensity group classes, all with a focus on safety.

"Furthermore, I try to look at people’s attitudes when I walk into a private gym. Everyone seems good with working toward their own individual goals, rather than trying to reach what’s been pre-defined as a decent deadlift weight or a fast workout time. Additionally, the trainers will help you with your diet plans and create incentives such as diet challenges and fitness competitions to further provide motivation.

"Some of the equipment you’ll find here:

  • rigs with plenty of monkey bars
  • ellipticals
  • treadmills
  • rowers
  • power lifting cage
  • gymnastics rings
  • climbing ropes
  • free weights
  • bumper plates

"In other words, regardless of your training style or regimen, you’ll find what you need.
